Vitamin D
Ergocalciferol 300,000 IU
Vitamin D is otherwise known as the sunshine Vitamin because you need adequate sunshine exposure for your body to synthesise it.
Vitamin D functions as a steroid hormone and affects all the cells in your body. It help to stabilise mood, keep bones, teeth, kidneys, immune sytem and cardiovascular system healthy.
It is not freely available in even the healthiest of diets and many people are Vitamin D deficient. People who use sunscreens, have darker skin tones or are overweight are more likely to become deficient. Symptoms include regular illnesses or infections, aches and pains, hair thinning, low mood and fatigue.
I recommend everyone should take a supplimentation of 2000 IU daily. However oral supplements may be unreliable if the body cannot absorb it, or if it is forgotten.
Blood levels rise better with intramuscular injections compared with oral tablets. A dose of 300,000 IU every 6 months will keep your stores topped up and prevent deficiency.
Vitamin B12
Hydroxocobalamin 1mg/1ml
Vitamin B12, or cyanocobalamin, is a group of cobalt-containing water-soluble vitamins. It is required for several important functions in the body including keeping the nervous system healthy, forming red blood cells and DNA, and regulating cell growth and metabolism. It is found in meat and diary products and is absorbed through special cells in the gut, deficiency is common in those who follow a plant based diet.
Deficiency can lead to anaemia, resulting in tiredness, fatigue, lack of energy, slow cognition, parasthesia (pins and needles), a sore tongue or mouth ulcers and mood disturbances.
Intramuscular vitamin injections are highly effective, easily absorbed and last three months. It is the best treatment for those with deficiency, poor absorption or who forget to take supplements. I recommend a 1mg injection every 2-3 months to keep your stores topped up.
Blood tests can be arranged privately through Dalston Dermal or via your NHS GP to check your existing levels prior to treatment to guide a taylored regieme if you have symptoms of deficiency.
